Due to forced displacement currently and in the past decades, many refugees from Burma have fled to Thailand where they live in refugee camps. Many of the farmers and families at Transplanting Traditions spent time in refugee camps in Thailand before their resettlement in the US. Most of the youth currently in the Transplanting Traditions youth program were born in the US or came here when they were very young and have a limited knowledge of what their family’s life was like living in Thailand.
This trip will give youth the opportunity to learn more about their culture, family history, and food and farming traditions! Youth have expressed that they are looking forward to understanding and seeing where their families spent time, trying delicious food and connecting with the culture.
The focus of the trip will be learning about culture and traditions and participating in food justice activities. The youth are raising funds for their flights, accommodation, and activities - support our youth in connecting with their heritage!
Stay tuned for an upcoming video sharing more about the trip!
